Paying It Forward

Journal

It’s amazing what happens when you do something small and unexpected for someone else. It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture, you can just hold the door for someone. Chances are, they might hold the door for the next person. Why not set off a chain reaction of goodness?!

Paying It Forward

Jonathan Zuker

I love painting just as a general rule of thumb, I mean like really, really love painting -> But getting the opportunity to be the Artist in Residence at the Mass General Hospital Cancer Center always helps me appreciate things just a little bit more. I get to see so many random acts of kindness, compassion, and strangers paying it forward and it’s just nice to be a small, colorful part of that cycle! It’s a great view of Beacon Hill, but it’s the people I meet that are so inspiring!

Today I had a visitor to the pop-up studio. She had been up some weeks before, very positive and upbeat personality and had taken one of the painted heart coasters from a previous visit. I reminded her she could take another coaster, and add to her collection. She responded, ‘Can I tell you the story of that coaster…’

She continued, ‘So I absolutely was delighted by the heart coaster, but I had some more time to spend that day at the hospital. When I was getting ready to leave, there was a woman sitting on a chair in the hallway crying. I sat down next to her and said I got this heart today, but I want you to have it. We talked for a few minutes, she stopped crying, and I think she felt a little better when I left.’

Yes! I had one left

Then she asked me if I happened to have any more heart coasters. I was happy that I did and even happier to hear that story. She told me it was nice to have something in that moment to give away. Now I will always make sure to bring an extra heart coaster around, just in case anyone else needs to share the love, so we can all help pay it forward.

Stay Colorful -> Jonathan!
